It reacts with halogens at temperatures above 600 ° C, with ammonia - when heated above 1200 ° C to form nitride Be3 N2, and with carbon at t ° 1700 ° C to form carbide. This metal is readily soluble in dilute inorganic acids, but cold concentrated nitric acid passivates it. It displaces hydrogen from an aqueous solution of alkali, and is itself converted to hydroxide.
