General characteristics

Titanium alloys are classified by crystalline grating configuration: in the form of hexahedron — α- grid, in the form of cube — β, mixed state — α+β. Titanium gost VT3−1 relates to alpha-beta alloys. They contain such alloying elements as aluminium (6,3%), copper (1,5%), molybdenum (2,5%), silicon (0,3%), iron (0,5%). Aluminium is the main alloying element of almost all grades of titanium alloys. It is relatively cheap, easily accessible; its density is less than titanium density. That is why strength-to-density ratio of material increases without loss of plasticity. When aluminium is increased, module of elasticity and heat-resistance are increased too. Propensity to hydrogen embrittlement is decreased in this case. Molybdenum additives foster increasing of corrosive, chemical, heat resistance. They also mitigate a forming of alpha-phase at thermohardening. Forming of alpha-phase without neutral reinforcing agent and α-stabilizers is decreased at a huge scope of β-stabilizers.

Manufacture of titanium wire, rod, bar complies with GOST 27 265−87., Black spots, places of non-pickling must not be present on a surface. Color of products must be clear and clean, without tarnish tint. A distortion that is formed at annealing is not a flaw.

Advantages

Wire, rod, bar of titanium gost VT3−1 have high corrosive, chemical, heat resistance, inconspicuous thermal linear coefficient of expansion, softness, plasticity. Fatigue resistance directly depends on outdoor environment. Titanium alloys in vacuum possess higher enduring quality than in aerial environment. Surface quality exerts a huge influence on a turn-around enduring quality of material. There are implied its macro- and micrometric pimples, roughness, structural physical and mechanical stability of cases that depend on machining conditions. Gentle finishing mechanical treatment, metal removing (up to 0.1 mm), and further hand polishing to 8−9 grade of roughness with a help of cuprum coated abrasives exert an influence on fatigue range.

Demerits

The main demerit is a high ratio of labour to output. Titanium smelts only in an environment of inert gasses or in vacuum as long as a liquid-alloy can actively engage with any atmospheric gasses. Wire, bar, rod of titanium gost VT3−1 are hard to cut. At that, their strength (390−540 MPa) is not the highest.

Application

Wire, bar, rod of titanium gost VT3−1 are used for manufacturing essential details that can withstand extreme conditions of operational use in aircraft, rocket engineering, shipbuilding. Acid and corrosive resistance of material have a fundamental importance in petrochemical, chemical, gas and oil industries. Biological inertness is the most important in agricultural, food industries, medicine.
