Technical characteristics

Red brasses are alloys that almost fully consist of copper and have up to 8% of zinc. Such alloy relates to monophasic brass. It has high strength, perfect electrical conductivity, biological inertness and durable operational life. If brass contains 15−20% of zinc, it is called semi-red. If brass contains 20−36% of zinc, it is called yellow. Generally, brass that contains more than 45% of zinc is used rarely. Zinc is cheaper than copper, that is why its presence gives improving of mechanical properties and decrease in value of final product. Brass possesses better workable and antifriction properties than copper. Buy copper has higher electrical and heat conductivity.

Red brass

According to EN12165, percentage composition of red brasses can vary in wide range depending on intention of alloy - whether it would be deformable or casting alloy. High content of phosphorus (up to 1,5%) is specific to casting alloy C83600. At that, copper content must not be less than 88%.

Corrosion resistance

Total corrosion resistance of brass in condition of high atmosphere moisture equals average resistance of all elements contained in alloy (zinc and copper). For reference: yellow brass, which contains more than 20% of zinc, is exposed to cracking in humid environment, especially under ammonia effect. It appears particularly strong in strained products because corrosion mostly broadens along brass edges. In order to clear retained stress after deformation, brass details must be annealed at a high temperature.

Brass CuZn5 (2.0220)

CuZn5 (2.0220) brass relates to red brasses. It differs with very high copper content in composition - about 96%. This material is very consistent and widely used. It relates to two-component brasses. CuZn5 (2.0220) grade is mostly utilized in electrical and mechanical engineering.
