Technical characteristics

Nowadays, metal powders are often used where it is hard or impossible to make the alloys using traditional methods, for example, at a high temperature difference of melting points. Depending on composition, powder alloys can be used in various spheres of industrial manufacture. Powder metal is an amorphous mix of very small metallic parts. Depending on a size of these parts, the powders are divided into ultrafine (up to 0.5 µm), very thin (0.5−10 µm), standard grinding (10−40 µm), average grinding (40−150 µm), thick (150−500 µm).

By a type and a shape of parts, metallic powders are divided into:

equiaxial with the equal dimensions by all directions;

fibered (possess a maximum size over length);

flat (possess small thickness).

Properties

Metallic powders are characterized by compressibility, apparent powder density, yielding. Yielding is defined by a neutral particle beam velocity through the hole of specified section. High yielding level allows filling a die mold faster and more uniformly. This property depends on particle size, their shape, specific weight, roughness of surface. Parts of complex shape and rough surface have a low yielding. Compressibility is a capability of powder to assume under pressure effect a required shape and to keep it. The more complex shape of parts is the higher plasticity and compressibility are. A mass of free poured powder into a volume unit points to apparent powder density. It depends on specific weight of material and filled density of all capacity with powder particles. A large apparent density increases a density of billets. As a result, they can be much better pressed. This is a very important for manufacture of machine parts. High-porous products are manufactured out of metallic powders with a small apparent density.

Grades

Iron powder can be divided into 4 classes by size of grains: super fine, fine, mean, grit. Nowadays, modern industry uses the following powders of non-ferrous metals: PNK1, PNE1, PNK2, PNE2 (nickel), PMA, PM, PMS1, PMS2 (copper), PO (tin), PK1, 2 (cobalt), PS1, PS2 (silver) and other. Such metallic powders are made out of carbonic, alloyed steels, high-speed and stainless brass, steel, bronze and other metals.

Molybdenum powder

Molybdenum (Mo) is the 42nd element of Mendeleev's periodic system. This is a super refractory metal of light-grey color. Usually, it is applied in the capacity of additive to heat-resistant alloys in order to increase their workable properties. Its density constitutes about 10.2 g/cm3, melting point is 2620 °C, boiling temperature is about 4630 °C. Among different products made of this metal (wire, sheet, rod), the widest application has a powder of MPCH grade, which contains not less than 99.5% of molybdenum. 92% constitutes a powder grain (5 µm). Usually, it is a stock material for further manufacture. Methods of powder metallurgy allow obtaining molybdenum billets of different sizes. The billets are special bars for manufacture of wire and sheets.

Tungsten powder

Tungsten (W) is a hard refractory metal of dark-grey color. This is the 84th element of Mendeleev's table. Among different products made of this metal (wire, sheet, rod), a great importance represents a powder without which it is impossible to obtain a famous filament for lamps. Tungsten is indispensable as an alloying additive for super-hard steels and for heat-resistant and wear-resistant alloys. Tungsten carbide is the main component of hard alloys.
