Vanadium is the 23rd element of periodic system that is marked with letter «V».It is lustrous silver-grey metal. Chemical valence is +2 +5. Atomic weight constitutes 50,9415. Technical characteristics
Vanadium is malleable, forgeable, hard metal that looks like steel. Boiling temperature is 3400 °C; melting point is about 1920 °C; density is 6.11 g/cm3. Crystal lattice is body-centered cubic (0.3024 millimicrons). Vanadium is enough chemically inert material. It can withstand effect of seawater, diluted solutions of alkalis and acids — salt, nitric, sulfuric. It can react with halogens. Vanadium can form a few oxides: V2 O3, VO, V2 O5, VO2. Orange V2 O5 is acidic, dark-blue VO2 is amphoteric. The rest oxides are basic. There are also known VN nitrite, V3 Si silicide, V2 S sulfide. VC carbide is extremely refractory. It melts only at 2800 °C.

Application
About ¾ of extracted vanadium is used as an alloy additive at smelting of wear-resisting, corrosion and heat resistant alloys or as an additive at manufacture of magnetic alloys. V2 O5 is synthesis catalyst of sulfuric acid. It speeds up an oxidizing of sulfurous dioxide into sulfur trioxide. Other oxides can form fast pigments. They are used in textile, paint-and-varnish, and glass industry.
