Terbium oxide (Tb₄O₇), also known as terbium(III,IV) oxide, is an inorganic compound belonging to the group of rare-earth oxides. It is typically supplied as a fine, odorless dark-brown to chocolate-brown powder and is characterized by very high thermal stability.
Terbium oxide is insoluble in water but dissolves in hot concentrated acids, forming the corresponding terbium salts. Similar to praseodymium oxide, Tb₄O₇ is a mixed-valence oxide containing both Tb³⁺ and Tb⁴⁺ ions.
One of the most important properties of terbium is its intense green photoluminescence around 545 nm, caused by electronic transitions of Tb³⁺ ions. This makes terbium oxide particularly important for green phosphors used in displays, LEDs and lighting applications.
The material also exhibits strong magneto-optical activity. Terbium compounds are used in materials with a high Verdet constant, enabling controlled rotation of the polarization plane of light in magnetic fields. Tb₄O₇ is commonly produced by calcining terbium oxalate or terbium hydroxide in air at temperatures above 800 °C.
The element terbium is used both as terbium metal and in the form of specialized compounds. Terbium and its compounds are relevant for phosphors, high-performance magnets, magneto-optical systems, sensors and specialty alloys.
