Boron is a chemical element belonging to the group of metalloids. Depending on the supplied form, it is available either as a fine brown amorphous powder or as a very hard, dark crystalline solid with a metallic luster. With a melting point of approximately 2076 °C and a boiling point of around 3927 °C, boron is classified as a high-melting element.

One of the most notable properties of boron is its exceptionally high hardness. Crystalline boron reaches approximately 9.3 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest known solid materials. At room temperature, boron has very low electrical conductivity, while its semiconductor behavior becomes more pronounced as the temperature rises.

The boron-10 isotope has an exceptionally high thermal-neutron capture cross-section. This makes boron an effective neutron-absorbing material for nuclear applications. Chemically, boron is highly resistant to air, water and many acids at room temperature, while at elevated temperatures it exhibits strong reducing properties.

Boron reacts with metals to form extremely hard borides. Industrial production is mainly carried out by thermal reduction of boron trioxide with magnesium or by chemical vapor deposition (CVD).

The element boron is widely used in metallurgy, permanent magnets, nuclear technology and high-performance ceramics. In boron steels, it is added to improve hardenability and grain refinement, while it is also used in stainless steels and nickel-based alloys.
