Technical characteristics
Alumel is an alloy that consists of nickel and aluminium with an adding of silicon, cobalt, and manganese.
1. Melting point is 1440 °C;
2. Specific electrical resistance is 0,32 Ohm-mm2/m;
3. Density of a material is 8480 kg/m3;
4. Coefficient of a thermal expansion is 16…18•10−6 °C-1.
By means of a good spring power, a wire, a strip or a rod can be made of this alloy. They are used for manufacture of thermocouples and compensating lead wires. The main demerit of alumel is its price, which is high because of a presence of nickel in a composition. Zirconium or zirconium + brome can be added in alloy for a refining of physical characteristics. It allows using this alloy at high temperatures in an aggressive environment. Thanks to the performance values, an alloy is widely used in modern pyrometry. Unique properties of a material are conditioned by its balanced composition. With an appearance of the similar materials, there has become a possibility to refine a lot of production methods, where a manufacturing is coupled with a force of high-temperature and aggressive environment. By virtue of these materials, it has become possible to provide a long-term, reliable working of a whole structure in a wide temperature range.
Application
Alloy is widely used in a pyrometry in a form of wire or strip for producing thermocouples (diameter of a wire is 0,2 — 3,2 mm), heating controllers, compensating lead wires. A thermocouple consists of electric conductor fumes, that are soldered in one end and placed in the oriented for thermometry environment («hot junction»). Exposed ends are going to be placed into a thermostat (so-called «cold junction»). Thanks to alloyage, a thermocouple of this kind can stand a short-term effect of temperature up to 1300 °C working in an aggressive environment. Alumel compensating lead wires that are connected to transducers, reduce an error in indication. By virtue of small sizes and high readability, alumel-chromel transducers are used in automobile construction, aerospace engineering, in physical and chemical laboratories.
