Technical characteristics

Chromel — it is nickel alloy that consists of nickel (89−91%), chrome (8,7−10%) with additions of silicon, ferrum, and cobalt. The main advantages of alloy are its heat resistance and corrosive resistance that are supported by a presence of nickel in composition.

Special features:

1. Density of material is 8,71 g/cm3;

2. Melting point is 1500 °C;

3. Coefficient of a linear expansion is 12,8•10−6°C.

At points of contact with other metals, an alloy produces a current potential, when heating. It can be changed directly in a large range of temperatures. For instance, a thermoelectric power of a fume with platinum at a temperature from 1000 °C to 0 °C equals about 33 millivolts. Chrome thermocouple is capable of keeping a constant thermo-electromotive force in air at t ° 20−1000 ° C. Higher temperatures increase the error.

Alloy treatment

Nickel is ministerial to increasing of origin, plasticity, and corrosion resistance. An annealing is carried out at a temperature of 800−900°C; hot working at 1000−1200°C. Disadvantages include a decrease of thermal emf in a process of rapid cooling after annealing below 600 °C. Depending on alloy cooling time, there can be changed its thermal electromotive force — the faster it cools, the lower its thermal emf becomes.

Relevance

Typically, at a manufacturing there are used chromel wires, but a strip and a sheet gained no less popularity. Strip is utilized for producing thermocouples and heating units. Due to an excellent heat resistance, strip has become well established in a manufacture of temperature detectors while welding.
