Yttrium(III) oxide (Y₂O₃), also known as yttrium oxide or yttria, is an inorganic compound belonging to the group of rare-earth oxides. It is supplied as a fine, odorless white powder. With a melting point of approximately 2425 °C and a boiling point of around 4300 °C, the material offers exceptionally high thermal stability.
Y₂O₃ is practically insoluble in water but dissolves readily in warm inorganic acids to form the corresponding yttrium(III) salts. The material has a wide band gap of approximately 5.5 eV, a high dielectric constant and excellent optical transmission across the visible and infrared spectral ranges.
One of the most important applications of yttrium oxide is the phase stabilization of zirconium dioxide. Adding Y₂O₃ produces yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), which suppresses undesirable phase transformations and improves the fracture resistance and operational reliability of technical ceramics.
Yttrium oxide is also an important host material for phosphors and laser systems. It can accommodate rare-earth activator ions for luminescent materials, including red-emitting phosphors, and serves as an important raw material for yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystals used in solid-state lasers.
Industrial Y₂O₃ is mainly produced by thermal calcination of yttrium oxalate, yttrium hydroxide or yttrium carbonate at temperatures above 800 °C. Its combination of thermal, optical and dielectric properties makes it useful in advanced ceramics, optics, phosphors, fuel cells and microelectronics.
Yttrium and its compounds are particularly important in YSZ ceramics, laser materials, phosphors, solid oxide fuel cells and electronic components. Would you like to buy yttrium oxide?
