Tantalum pieces are a high-purity, pre-sized product form of the refractory metal tantalum. The material is supplied as irregular chunks, cut pieces or size-graded fragments. With a density of 16.65 g/cm³ and a melting point of approximately 3017 °C, tantalum belongs to the group of extremely high-melting elements.
One of the key properties of tantalum is its exceptional corrosion resistance. At room temperature, the metal is protected by a dense, self-healing passivation layer of tantalum(V) oxide, Ta₂O₅.
Tantalum is insoluble in water and highly resistant to most acids, including hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and aqua regia. Dissolution occurs mainly in fluoride-containing media and particularly aggressive chemical melts or mixtures.
The material combines very high density with good ductility and formability while retaining high mechanical strength. Tantalum pieces are typically supplied in purity grades from 99.9% (3N) to 99.99% (4N), with low levels of interstitial impurities such as oxygen, nitrogen and carbon.
Industrial tantalum production can involve reduction of potassium fluorotantalate K₂TaF₇ with sodium or electrochemical refining followed by electron-beam remelting. This processing route enables high-purity material with low gas content for vacuum and metallurgical applications.
Tantalum metal is particularly important in vacuum metallurgy, superalloy production, PVD processing, chemical equipment and sputtering-target manufacture. Would you like to buy tantalum?
