Tungsten powder is a hard highly-dispersed mass with a high refractory quality and hardness. It is widely used for manufacture of compacted metal as a basis for baling of heat-resistant alloys by method of powder metallurgy. At first, there are obtained billets that are the blankets for electrodes, sheets, wire, and bars.

The main grades are WP and PWW (highly-active tungsten powder), PWN (low-active tungsten powder), PWT (commercial powder). Manufacture of these grades is specified by technical conditions 48−19−72−92. Standard diameter of PWN grains constitutes 3.5−6 µm, PWT — 3.5−6 µm, PWW — 0.8−1.7 µm. But in some cases (not higher than 40%), size of PWN grains can be more than 4 µm.

Refractory quality and hardness of tungsten allow suing it in manufacture of high-speed engineering steels, heat-resistant, wear-resistant, super-hard alloys, electric lightning equipment, welding electrodes. Tungsten powder is the main component of non-consumable electrodes for welding, high-speed engineering steels, wear and heat resistant alloys (stellite). Carbide WC is a basis of tungsten-cobalt hard alloy of grade WK.

Tungsten powder, dispersion of which is characterized by Fisher sub sieve size, complies with the standards given below:

Grade Fisher diameter of grains, µm
PWN 3.5 — 6.0
PWW 0.8 — 1.7
PWT 3.5 — 6.0

— content of grains of grade PWN with a size more than 4 µm cannot exceed 40%.

— apparent density of grades PWT, PWN must be in the range of 3.0−5.5 g/cm3.

— apparent density of PWW is not considered as a rejection sign.
