Beryllium is lightweight and hard metal with atomic number 4. It is an element of the second period of periodical system where it is designated as Be. It is used for manufacture of space rocket parts. It is very toxic in powder-like state. But in a state of large segments, it is relatively non-hazardous. It looks like a simple ceramic of beryllium oxide. It poorly conducts electricity and heat — that is why it is used as electric insulator.
By chemical properties, Be is more similar to aluminium, than to magnesium, which belongs to the same group and has the same valence +2. Metallic beryllium is not very active in standard conditions. It is not oxidized up to a temperature of 600 °C. It does not react with hydrogen in solid bulk form, water, and water vapor even at a temperature of red heat. Powder-like beryllium can easily inflame by forming nitride+oxide It reacts with:
— halogens at a temperature higher than 600°C
— ammonia at a temperature of 1200 °C, forming nitride Be3 N2
— carbon at a temperature of 1700 °C, forming carbide Ве2 С.
Beryllium easily dissolves in diluted mineral acids. However, concentrated nitric cold acid immunizes it. It displaces hydrogen from hydrogenous alkali solution by turning into hydroxide.
