Europium(III) oxide (Eu₂O₃) is an inorganic compound belonging to the group of rare-earth oxides. It is supplied as a fine, odorless powder with a white to slightly pink appearance. With a melting point of approximately 2350 °C, europium oxide offers very high thermal stability.
Eu₂O₃ is insoluble in water but readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from ambient air. In inorganic acids, the compound dissolves to form the corresponding europium(III) salts.
One of the most important properties of Eu³⁺ ions is their brilliant, narrow-band red photoluminescence with an emission wavelength of approximately 611 nm under UV excitation. When europium is reduced to the divalent Eu²⁺ state, intense blue to green emission can be obtained. This change in valence state allows different emission spectra to be produced.
Europium also has a very high thermal-neutron capture cross-section of approximately 4600 barns. This property makes europium compounds relevant for nuclear technology and neutron-absorbing applications.
Europium(III) oxide is typically produced by thermal calcination of europium oxalate or europium hydroxide at temperatures above 800 °C. The material is particularly important in phosphors, optoelectronics, security marking, nuclear technology, sensing and specialized optical materials.
Europium and its compounds are especially important for red phosphors used in LEDs, displays and fluorescent lighting. Would you like to buy europium oxide?
