Chromium is a transition metal and one of the most important alloying elements in modern metallurgy. In its pure form, chromium is a silvery-white, highly lustrous and very hard metal. It is commercially available as electrolytic flakes, pieces, granules or powder. With a melting point of approximately 1907 °C, chromium is suitable for demanding metallurgical and high-temperature applications.
One of the most characteristic properties of chromium metal is its high hardness of approximately 8.5 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest pure metals. Chromium also offers excellent resistance to corrosion and tarnishing.
When exposed to air, chromium immediately develops an extremely thin and dense passive layer of chromium(III) oxide, Cr₂O₃. This self-healing protective film prevents further oxidation and provides resistance against acids and other aggressive environments.
At room temperature, chromium exhibits antiferromagnetic behavior with a Néel temperature of approximately 311 K. High-purity chromium metal is mainly produced industrially by aluminothermic reduction of chromium(III) oxide or by electrolysis from chromium-containing solutions.
The element chromium is particularly important in stainless steel, tool steels, heat-resistant alloys and specialty metals. Chromium metal improves hardness, hardenability, wear resistance, high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance in many alloy systems.
