Manganese is a chemical element belonging to the group of transition metals. In its pure form, it is a silvery-white, hard and very brittle metal. Commercial manganese is commonly supplied as electrolytic flakes, briquettes, granules or powder.

Manganese is chemically reactive and rapidly oxidizes in moist air, forming a brown oxide layer. In dilute acids, manganese metal dissolves readily with the evolution of hydrogen.

The element is particularly important in metallurgy. During steel production, manganese acts as an effective deoxidizing and desulfurizing agent. It binds unwanted oxygen and sulfur, with sulfur being removed from the melt as manganese sulfide, MnS. This helps improve steel quality and reduce problems during hot working.

Manganese exists in four allotropic modifications and has a complex crystal structure. At low temperatures, it exhibits pronounced antiferromagnetic behavior. High-purity manganese metal is mainly produced industrially by electrolysis of manganese sulfate solutions derived from manganese ores such as pyrolusite, MnO₂.

The element manganese is widely used in structural steels, stainless steels, wear-resistant alloys, aluminum alloys, battery materials and chemical compounds. Manganese metal is especially important as an alloying element because it can increase strength, hardness and wear resistance.
