Demerits
Niobium is quite expensive metal. Metallic niobium fume irritates eyes, skin. It is flammable material. Its separate joints are very toxic. MPC of Nb constitutes 0.01 mg/l. In the event of its entry into human body, niobium can provoke neuritis with further pamplegia.
Application
niobium and its alloys are applied in manufacturing the parts of rockets, air-planes; coverages of uranium and plutonium boilers (melting points of NbC carbide is 3480°С), containers for liquid metal. Applicable heating agents in nuclear reactors - liquid sodium and potassium circulate through tubes. Niobium possesses low artificial (induced) radioactivity. That is why it fits to storage the wastes of radioactive elements. It is broadly used for manufacture of electrolytic capacitors as well as for «hot» fitting of powerful electronic tubes (anodes, cathodes, grids).
Resistant to corrosion devices for chemical industry are also made out of niobium alloys. Non-ferrous metals and even uranium are alloyed with a help of this metal. Niobium is utilized in superconducting - cryotron components of the computing machines. It is also used in accelerating structures of the hadron collider.
