General characteristics

European titanium alloy Ti-6A-l2Sn-4Zr-2Mo relates to α + β group of alloys. It is manufactured by double or triple melting. Semi-finished products of titanium alloy always overpass ultrasonic testing and chemical composition controling. Alloy composition includes metals such as aluminium, molybdenum, stannum, zirconium, yttrium. Alloy is hardened by heat treatment. It has good corrosion resistance, strength, workability, weldability with other metals.

Percentage composition according to ASTM standard

Ti Al Zr Sn Mo Si Fe O C N H Y Residual elements
Basis 5,5−6,5 3,6−4,4 1,8−2,2 1,8−2,2 0 06−0.1 ≤0,25 ≤0,12 ≤0.05 ≤0.05 ≤0.015 ≤0,005 ≤0.3

Alloy can be not only hot formed, but cold formed as well. Its technical properties depend on a presence of inevitable impurities in its composition, which are divided into two groups: 1) interstitial impurity: oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, and 2) substitutional impurities: silicon and iron. Interstitial impurities strongly affect a quality of titanium — reduce ductility and increase strength. Strength of pure titanium (58 HB) can be increased by more than twice. A presence of oxygen concentration of 0.1−0.5% has little effect on titanium ductility. However, titanium completely loses its ability to metal flow at 0.7% oxygen content. Every hundredth percent of nitrogen increases resistance to rupture at the same time reducing ductility. Upon reaching a level of 0,2% N, there occurs brittle fracture of a metal.

Application

Alloy is used in a manufacture of aircraft engines and some components of airframes. Alloy is often used in marine, mining and energy industries, as well as in a manufacture of jet engines, where high strength, hardness, resistance to aggressive environment are needed.
