Deformed aluminum alloy of AK8 grade is represented by bars and sheets which are successfully used in the sphere of transport engineering and aircraft construction. The product, hardened and artificially aged has excellent mechanical properties both at high and low temperatures. Perhaps the only disadvantage of the alloy is its tendency to corrosion cracking.

Magnesium and copper impart strength to the alloy. Manganese, due to its properties, refines the structure, thereby increasing resistance to corrosion and strength. In addition to the above elements, the composition also uses silicon and iron up to 0.7%,. Fe is considered a harmful impurity, reduces strength and ductility. Si helps to reduce the harmful effects of iron, to a certain extent binding it. Due to alloying, the products of this grade are characterized by excellent processability and excellent resistance to possible cracking. In accordance with GOST 1583-93 number of alloying components in the manufacture of AK8 circle does not exceed 10%. Such ratio of alloying additives in the alloy allows to provide the products:
material hardness - up to 120 MPa;
tensile strength - 450 MPa;
yield strength - 400 MPa;
elongation - 8%.
Great hardness of material is obtained by cold deformation, and plasticity and workability is achieved by heat treatment. After annealing, excellent ductility is obtained, and after aging considerable self-strengthening is achieved. Annealing. The alloy is heated to 500 °C and upon cooling it acquires the flexibility similar to pure aluminum. After the aging process, hardness and toughness become the leading properties. To accomplish natural aging, approximately 24 hours and a working t° of 20 degrees Celsius are required. Artificial aging requires higher temperatures, but much less time. Once the heat treatment is completed, the material becomes strong enough and reliable material that can be used under high loads.
