Application
Tungsten is indispensable for details of X-ray techniques, targets of radio-electric tools, vacuum lamps, manufacturing of boats, heat resistant settings and cases. Tungsten sheet WA is used in manufacture of current injections for electron tubes, and heating parts of electrical furnace, Rapid development of modern robot technologies, instrument engineering, nuclear energetics, mechanical engineering, petrochemical industry, medicine increases demand for mill-products made out of refractory metals. Demerits
There are a few demerits:
- difficulty of tungsten obtaining in pure state;
- high volume weight (as gold has);
- brittleness at low temperature. Due to its unique properties, it can be processed (rolled, drawn, forged) only after heating up.
Manufacture
Tungsten sheet is manufactured out of tin bars with a help of special hot-cold rolling. As long as tungsten can easily react with atmospheric gasses, there are used the most modern technologies of chemical protection. Firstly, there are manufactured blanks (billets) with a help of powder metallurgy method. Then, it must be heated and rolled on forging rotary machine. There are obtained sheets with a very smooth surface. Oxides are deleted with hot solution of caustic soda or by ignition (t° 1000°C) in hydrogen atmosphere. Manufacturing quality control is performed at all steps of manufacture. The thinnest sheet is the lower heating for treatment it requires. Foil can be rolled at standard temperature. It can be stamped (squirted) into products of any required shape.
Processing
A joint of tungsten sheets is performed with a help of butt-seam or spot welding. But seam is nearly always brittle and recrystallized. The most reliable method is riveted joint.
