Samarium oxide (Sm₂O₃), also known as samarium(III) oxide, is an inorganic compound belonging to the group of rare-earth oxides. It is typically supplied as a fine, slightly yellowish-white powder and is characterized by very high thermal stability.
Samarium oxide is insoluble in water but dissolves readily in inorganic acids, forming the corresponding samarium(III) salts. The material can also absorb moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, making suitable storage conditions important for maintaining product quality.
Sm³⁺ ions exhibit characteristic optical properties, including pronounced infrared absorption. Samarium also has a high thermal-neutron capture cross-section of approximately 5900 barns, making its compounds relevant for nuclear technology and specialized functional materials.
Samarium oxide is an important precursor for the production of samarium metal. Samarium metal is particularly important for SmCo permanent magnets, which combine high coercivity, excellent temperature stability and strong resistance to demagnetization.
The element samarium is used both as samarium metal and in the form of specialized compounds. Samarium and its compounds are relevant for permanent magnets, nuclear technology, specialty glass, optics, catalysis and electronics. Sm₂O₃ is commonly produced by calcining samarium oxalate, hydroxide or carbonate at temperatures above 800 °C.
