Gadolinium oxide (Gd₂O₃), also known as gadolinium(III) oxide, is an inorganic compound belonging to the group of rare-earth oxides. It is typically supplied as a fine, odorless white powder and is characterized by very high thermal stability.

Gadolinium oxide is insoluble in water but dissolves readily in mineral acids, forming the corresponding gadolinium(III) salts. With a melting point of approximately 2420 °C, Gd₂O₃ is suitable for advanced materials exposed to demanding high-temperature conditions.

The Gd³⁺ ion has a particularly high magnetic moment due to its seven unpaired electrons. Natural gadolinium also has an exceptionally high effective thermal-neutron absorption cross-section of approximately 49,000 barns. These magnetic and neutron-absorbing properties make gadolinium compounds important in nuclear technology, medical technology and advanced materials.

Gadolinium oxide is commonly produced by calcining gadolinium hydroxide, oxalate or carbonate at temperatures above 800 °C. Gd₂O₃ is also used as a functional additive in advanced ceramics, phosphor materials and solid oxide fuel cell systems.

The element gadolinium is used both as gadolinium metal and in the form of specialized compounds. Gadolinium and its compounds are relevant for nuclear technology, medical diagnostics, electronics, lighting technology, high-performance ceramics and materials research.
