Technical Characteristics

Vanadium is a coarse-grained, silver-colored material. Despite the fact that it is quite common in the Earth's crust, its industrial use began not so long ago. The reason is that this metal is scattered in different rocks and minerals, and its mining and processing requires the use of modern technology. Vanadium has the following characteristics:

Chemical symbol. V
Specific gravity. 6.11 g/cm³
Melting point 2160 K (1887 °C)
Boiling point 3650 К (3377 °C)
Specific heat of melting 17,5 kJ/mol
Specific heat of vaporization 460 kJ/mol
Oxidation degree 5, 4, 3, 2, 0

Applications

Nowadays alloys with vanadium are used in production of cast iron and steels, in addition the metal is added to titanium to improve the characteristics of the latter. Vanadium is also used as a catalyst in the production of sulfuric acid. Furthermore, modern science has made it possible to use refractory metals in medicine, textiles, glasswork and the paint and varnish industry. Most of the vanadium mined is used for heat-resistant rolled steel. It greatly increases the heat resistance of the metals and also eliminates brittleness. These alloys can serve as the basis for refractory structural materials in the nuclear power and aerospace industries.
