Neodymium oxide (Nd₂O₃), also known as neodymium(III) oxide, is an inorganic compound belonging to the group of rare-earth oxides. It is typically supplied as a fine, hygroscopic powder with a characteristic blue-violet color and offers high thermal stability.
Neodymium oxide is insoluble in water but dissolves readily in inorganic acids, forming the corresponding neodymium(III) salts. With a melting point of approximately 2233 °C, the material remains stable under demanding high-temperature conditions.
One of the characteristic properties of Nd₂O₃ is its pronounced absorption in the visible spectrum, caused by electronic transitions within the partially filled 4f shell of the Nd³⁺ ion. Depending on the light source, the powder and materials doped with it can exhibit a noticeable color change known as the alexandrite effect.
Neodymium oxide is also an important precursor for the production of neodymium metal. The element neodymium is particularly important for high-performance NdFeB permanent magnets used in electric motors, wind turbines, electronics and other advanced technologies.
Neodymium metal and its compounds are also used in laser technology, specialty glass, protective optics, ceramics and catalysis. Nd₂O₃ is typically produced by thermal decomposition of neodymium hydroxide, neodymium oxalate or neodymium carbonate at temperatures above 800 °C.
