It is in much-request in manufacturing springs, heating electrical elements because it possesses elasticity, corrosive resistance, long-term service. Chemical interaction of alloy components with oxygen forms on a surface an extremely thin film that can resist corrosion. Bar section of an actual steel grade is intended for manufacturing details that are exploited at a high temperature (not higher than 850ºС) in aggressive chemical environment. Due to increased content of nickel and chrome, such wire has a high corrosive resistance. It also provides an increased reliability of equipment.

Manufacture

Steel of this grade is smelted in open electrical furnaces. It gives a minimal content of residual elements. This alloy is released in the form of wire (it can have various thickness). Due to high nickel content (up to 77%), a high plasticity of alloy allows making wire with a minimal diameter. Thermohardening performs at a temperature of about 1120ºС with further cooling in water or in air. Age-hardening performs at a temperature of 700−750°C during 5−16 hours (depending on type of mill-products). This is hardly weldable alloy.

Application

Wire is intended for manufacturing springs that have exploitation temperature in a range of -70º +550ºС. It is used in manufacturing cylindrical spiral springs of tension and compression. Coil springs of tension and compression fall into 3 groups by a type of loads. A process of springs manufacture undergoes such operating steps as milling, polishing etc.; on completing it undergoes a heat treatment. Springs undergo a sand jet treatment that can scale off for increasing a corrosive resistance.

A quality of wire at a t° 20°С:

— short resistance to rupture = 950 MPa;

— flow limit = 620 MPa;

— ultimate elongation at break = up to 20%;

— ultimate contraction = not higher than 15%;

— hardness after thermohardening according to Brinnel = 255 — 321 MPa;

A wire surface does not oxidize at durable exploitation or at a high temperature. Annealed wire is malleable. This makes it popular in a manufacture of electrical and industrial appliances. It possesses a resistance in oxidising atmosphere if there are present ammonia and nitrogen. Its main demerit is that a wire does not have stability in atmosphere of sulphur and sulphur compounds. It is not cheap because its main component — nickel is expensive.
