Rolling mills for stainless steel

History

Rolling mills emerged in the middle of the 18th century, when steam engines began to roll metal using rolls. In America at the end of the 19th century the first blooming and slabbing mills, analogues of modern rolling mills, were designed.

Modern production

Stainless rolled steel today is produced in mills equipped with numerical control, the weight of ingots, can be from 1 to 18 tons. Cold or hot steel billets are placed in a rolling mill, where the rolls are crimped, rolled, calibrated and cut stainless steel billets. As a result, the following types of rolled products are produced:

  • Stainless steel sheet metal - the most popular material, always in demand for construction and the widest range of industries;
  • calibrated rolled products - rebar, bars, plates of different cross-section;
  • seamless stainless steel tubing;
  • Rolled steel for special purposes - formed round billets and shapes.

Automation

In modern rolling mills, throughputs on lines of the latest generation reach up to 50 m/s. Fully automated systems control the quality of the steel at every stage and check that the product conforms to the planned dimensions. Computer control has increased the accuracy of the produced stainless steel range by an order of magnitude.

Prospects

Modern technologies in the field of rolled metal products offer solutions which allow brilliant results. New super high-strength alloyed stainless steels are already on the consumer market and the rapid development of innovative nanotechnology means that in the foreseeable future a whole range of alloys with unique properties will appear.

Types of treatment

There are three types of rolling process: longitudinal, transverse and helical. Depending on the selected method, rolled steel products are divided into the following types:

  • Rolled longitudinally, when the billet is crimped, reducing the longitudinal section and increasing the length and width. Such a method is used to produce bar, section and sheet rolling;
  • The transverse method is characterized by the fact that the steel ingot is processed in the transverse direction in the process of rotation. This method makes a variety of rounded billets;
  • helical rolling combines the mechanical processes of the two above-mentioned technologies and is intended for the production of seamless pipes.

Changes in the mechanical parameters of the crimping and movement of the billet in the rolling mill allow to obtain products of desired shape, of which later will be manufactured various parts and structural elements.
