Types and kinds of stainless steel

Technical Characteristics

All types and grades of stainless steel include nickel - this stabilizes the austenitic structure of iron, making such alloys non-magnetic and less brittle at low temperatures. Carbon is added to the alloy to increase its hardness. Additions of manganese, like nickel, preserve the austenitic structure of the alloy, but manganese is a cheaper material. Auremo, a supplier of certified rolled metal products, offers the following types of stainless steel.

Austenitic grades.

Types and kinds of stainless steel differ in their crystalline structure: Austenitic grades account for over 70% of rolled steel. They contain up to 0.15% carbon, at least 16% chromium and enough nickel and/or manganese to maintain the austenitic structure from cryogenic temperature to melting point. The classic composition (containing 18% Cr and 10%, Ni) is known as 18/10 and is used for stamping cutlery. The steel grades 18/10 and 18/8, the "Super Austenitic" stainless alloys AL-6XN and 254SMO, are very resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion due to the high proportion of molybdenum (>6%) with an admixture of nitrogen, and the higher percentage of nickel increases resistance to corrosion cracking.

Ferritic grades

These are very corrosion resistant but are not hardenable by quenching and aging as the austenitic grades are. Ferritic grades contain 10.5-27% Cr and a small proportion of nickel and molybdenum (2-4%); some grades contain aluminum or titanium. Typical ferritic grades include 18% Cr + 2%Mo, 26% Cr + 1%Mo, 29% Cr + 4%Mo, and 29% Cr + 4%Mo + 2%Ni.

Martensitic grades.

These are not as resistant to corrosion as the first two grades, but they are exceptionally strong and resilient. They are magnetic alloys, can be milled, and are hardened by quenching and aging. Such steel has 12-14% Cr, 0.2-1% Mo, no nickel, and about 0.1-1% carbon, which gives strength but also increases brittleness. Such steel is known as "series - 00."

Duplex stainless steel

It is obtained by a duplex process, and has a mixed microstructure of ferrite and austenite in a 50:50 ratio, although in industrial alloys, the compound may be 40:60. The duplex steel in the range of austenitic stainless steels exhibits improved strength and resistance to localized corrosion, especially pitting, crevice corrosion and corrosion cracking, with a high chromium content and a reduced nickel percentage, compared to the austenitic stainless steels.
