Welding and cutting of nickel and its alloys

Welding technology

Welding structures made of nickel and nickel alloys has its own characteristics. The most widespread is argon arc welding with a tungsten electrode. Welding nickel and nickel alloys with direct current of direct polarity ensures high quality of the weld. Argon-arc welding with a fusion electrode is also used in a small volume. Welding nickel and nickel alloys requires the use of electrodes (European, domestic or international standard). The electrodes are usually made from tungsten, because refractory metals provide high reliability of welding joints due to high welding temperature.


Each electrode is color-coded to avoid confusion. Tungsten non-consumable electrodes are made according to GOST 23 949-80. Melting carbide-tungsten electrodes are standardized according to GOST 21 448-75. The electrodes of this type are both of round cross-section (0.5 to 3x40 mm) and flat cross-section (4x2x40, 1.5x2x40, 1.5x3x40). In the production of carbide plates (BK6, BK60M, BK8, BK10) refractory metals are used:

- tungsten;

- titanium;

- cobalt;

- tantalum.

For example, soldering carbide inserts ВК6, according to GOST requirements, are made of tungsten. It makes it possible to use metal-cutting tools at high cutting speeds at temperatures up to 1000 C.
