Soldering of copper alloys and copper

Technical Characteristics

Soldering of copper alloys and copper has the following feature: these materials have high thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity and quite high corrosion resistance. There is a thin but strong protective film on their surface, which consists of C2 O oxide. Copper is not the strongest metal, but it is very ductile and maintains its ductility up to liquid helium temperature of -269°C. At higher temperatures, the strength decreases and the ductility increases.

Method Overview

Soldering of copper alloys and copper is most commonly carried out with gas torches, a soldering iron or by immersion in molten solder. Low-temperature solders are very common because of their general availability and ease of use. Using a soldering iron, soldering can be carried out at temperatures up to 350 °C, but only for thin-walled parts. Large parts are soldered with gas torches because of their high thermal conductivity, which is six times that of iron. The use of cadmium brazing alloys requires special skills, since their processability is much lower than that of tin-lead brazing alloys.

Immersion method

Used to braze copper tube heat exchangers. They are immersed in solder melts and salts. Salt bath furnaces and molten salts are used. The salts usually serve as a heat source with a fluxing action, and no additional fluxing is required. During soldering by immersion with solder in the bath, the pre-fluxed parts are heated in the solder melt that fills the connecting gaps at the soldering temperature. Inert gas or activated carbon protects the brazing mirror. It is very difficult to remove flux or salt residue after brazing in salt baths.

About brazing in furnaces

Widely used in industry, it is advantageous because there is a uniform heating without deformation of soldered products, even with their large size.

Solders and fluxes

Aqueous solutions of ammonium chloride or zinc chloride, as well as rosin-alcohol fluxes are used before using lead-tin and other low-melting-point solders. When brazing with silver brazing alloys, fluxes based on potassium fluoride and boron compounds are used.

Vacuum brazing

It is used to join copper to other metals. This brazing method is completely safe, quite economical and carried out in containers or vacuum furnaces, which are loaded into conventional furnaces.
