Notes

1 As agreed by the manufacturer with the consumer in cobalt grade K0, used for the production of nickel-containing steels and alloys, the mass fraction of nickel is not more than 0.05%; in the cobalt grade K1A, used for the production of manganese-containing steels and alloys, the mass fraction of manganese is not more than 0.07%.

2 According to the manufacturer’s agreement with the consumer, the actual content of additional impurities (chromium, calcium, selenium, titanium, aluminum, magnesium, silicon, etc.) that are not standardized in a particular brand is determined. The analysis is carried out according to the procedures, certified in the established order.

3 The «-" sign in the graphs of the chemical composition indicates that the impurity is not regulated.

3.3 Cobalt is manufactured in accordance with the requirements of this standard in the form of ingots, whole cathode sheets, plates or strips of arbitrary size, cut from cathode sheets. The maximum size of plates is 550x550 mm, the minimum size is 20x20 mm. Weight of ingots should not be more than 25 kg.

3.4 Edges of cathode sheets of cobalt should be cut from four sides. The ears of the cathode sheets are cut off along the edge of the cathodes. Upon agreement of the manufacturer with the consumer, cathode sheets of cobalt with uncut edges can be manufactured.

3.5 Cathode sheets, plates and cobalt bands should not have a coating of salts and impurities, inclusions of electrolyte salts and hydrated compounds. On the surface of cathode sheets, plates and strips, the colors of tarnishing, deepening and dense bumps are allowed. The area of depressions and dense bougovosti should not exceed 10% of the area of the sheet, plate or strip.

3.6 Surface of cobalt ingots should not have foreign inclusions. On the surface of ingots, the colors of tarnishing, bumpiness, depressions and shells are allowed.

The holes from sampling are allowed in sheets, plates, strips and ingots.

3.7 Marking

3.7.1. On each ingot of cobalt transported in bulk in specialized containers, the mark of cobalt and the batch number must be stamped, cast or applied with indelible paint. It is allowed not to mark on ingots if no more than one batch of cobalt is transported in the container.

4 Acceptance rules

4.1 Cobalt is taken in batches. The batch must consist of a metal of one brand and one type (sheets, plates, strips or ingots) and be accompanied by one quality document containing:

— the trademark or the name and trademark of the manufacturer;

— name and brand of the product;

— date of manufacture.

A batch of cobalt in the form of plates of a given size should consist of plates of this size only.

4.2 Surface quality control is performed on each sheet, plate, strip or cobalt ingot.

4.3 In batches of cobalt of grades K1Ay and K1A are guaranteed by technology and it is allowed to determine mass fractions of impurities once a quarter or at the request of consumers: bismuth, cadmium, lead, antimony, zinc, phosphorus, tin, arsenic; in lots of marks K1 and K2 — arsenic.

4.4 To check the chemical composition of the cobalt lot, the number of ingots, sheets, plates or strips is selected in accordance with Table 3 according to the rules of GOST 18321.

It is allowed for the manufacturer to check the chemical composition of each melting included in the batch. At the same time, the maximal value of this impurity is indicated from the obtained results of the smelting analysis for each admixture in the quality document.

4.5 If the results of the analysis of the chemical composition are not satisfactory, at least one of the impurities is re-analyzed on a doubled sample taken from the same batch. The results of the repeated analysis are distributed to the whole lot.

4.6 For the verification of the chemical composition, the manufacturer may apply statistical acceptance control of cobalt batches.

4.7 For the manufacturer it is allowed to carry out sampling to check the chemical composition of cobalt, made by fire refining, while filling the metal.

5 Methods of control

5.1 The quality of the cobalt surface of all grades for compliance with requirements 3.5 and 3.6 is checked visually.

5.2 Selection and preparation of samples for monitoring the chemical composition of cobalt — in accordance with GOST 24231 with additions.

Sheets, plates, strips or ingots are drilled with a hard metal drill with a diameter of at least 15 mm.

Sheets and plates with a size of at least 300x500 mm are drilled in three points: at the center and at two points horizontally at a distance of 50 mm from the edge. Strips and smaller plates are drilled at one point.

The ingots are drilled in one central point.

The mass of the laboratory sample is not less than 0.25 kg.

Each bank with a laboratory sample shall be provided with a label containing the following data:

— name of the manufacturer;

— Name of product;

— batch number;

— date of sampling.

5.3 Determination of the chemical composition of cobalt of all grades is carried out in accordance with GOST 13047.1, GOST 13047.3, GOST 13047.5-GOST 13047.21 and GOST 8776. Other methods of analytical control may be used if they are not inferior to those specified in the above-listed standards by metrological characteristics. At a disagreement in the assessment of the chemical composition of cobalt, the analysis is carried out in accordance with GOST 13047.1, GOST 13047.3, GOST 13047.5-GOST 13047.21.

The results of the chemical analysis are rounded to the last character indicated for the identified elements in Table 2.

5.4 Method of sampling and control of the chemical composition during the pouring of the metal — see annex A.

6 Transportation and storage

6.1 Cobalt is transported by all modes of transport in accordance with the rules for the transport of goods, operating on transport of each type: packed in accordance with 3.8 — in covered vehicles; in specialized containers — in covered or open vehicles taking into account the specified rules.

6.2 By rail, cobalt is transported in covered wagons and in universal containers in accordance with GOST 18477. The placement and fixing of specialized containers SK-3−1.5, packages formed from boxes, wooden drywall or metal drums with cobalt, is carried out in accordance with the technical conditions of placement and fastening of goods in wagons and containers and GOST 22235. Specialized containers must be sealed.

6.3 Packaging, marking and shipping accompanying documentation for batch of cobalt exported shall be established by the order of the foreign trade company or the contract.

6.4 For long-term storage, cobalt is packed in wooden boxes with a gross mass of up to 500 kg or in specialized containers. Boxes should be edged with a metal tape in accordance with GOST 3560, fastened «to the lock» or «lap», and formed into packages.

Storage of cobalt is carried out in enclosed spaces. Premises must have hard-surfaced floors, natural ventilation.

7 Manufacturer’s warranty

7.1. The manufacturer guarantees that the quality of cobalt meets the requirements of this standard under the conditions of storage.

Appendix A (informative). Method of sampling and control of the chemical composition during the pouring of metal

Appendix A
(reference)

Metal at regular intervals throughout the filling process is cast into special molds — «samplers» and get ingots with a height of 25−45 mm and a diameter of 35−40 mm. At the same time, at least 5 ingots are taken, cut by diameter, defective bars are rejected (with shrinkage shells and other casting defects). Grind the surface of the section of all suitable ingots and determine the content of impurities in a vacuum diffraction photoelectric spectrophotometer (DFS-51, DFS-71 or other models providing metrological characteristics of control methods in accordance with the standards specified in 5.3 of this standard). If it is not possible to cut the ingot, grind the bottom surface of the ingot and determine the content of impurities in the metal on this surface.

When analyzing the ingot, at least two parallel determinations are carried out. The average of all parallel determinations is taken as the result of the ingot analysis. The result of the analysis of melting is taken as the arithmetic mean of the ingot analysis.

To control the chemical composition of the smelting, it is necessary to have at least three ingots.
