Calculation of the nichrome coil
Winding of nichrome filament in heating devices is usually done "by eye", and the required number of turns is selected based on the heating of the wire after it is plugged in. Such a process is a waste of time, leads to a large overspending of valuable nichrome. The table below makes it possible to optimize the calculation process. All data is given for a filament with a known nichrome resistivity of 1.12 Ohmxmm2/m at 220 V. Using the table, it is easy to determine the diameter of the rod on which the coil is wound and the length of the rod when winding "turn to turn", depending on the thickness of the wire. The length of the coil for a different voltage is recalculated using the usual mathematical proportion.

The results stated in the table are easy to check according to the following formula. Yarn length (in mm) = nDL rod/thickness, where n = 3.1415926, D - rod diameter (in mm). If, for example, it is necessary to determine at voltage 127 V the length of the rod with diameter 4 mm, for winding of thread with thickness 0.3 mm. The table shows that the length of the rod at 220 V equals 22 mm. Having made the usual relation: 22 mm - 220 V; X - 127 V, we see: X = 22x127/ 220 = 12.7 mm. Accordingly, the length of the filament will be reduced. When winding the coil, it is necessary to connect it, without cutting it, to the voltage source, making sure that it is winded correctly. Closed spirals increase the winding length by 1/3 of the value given in the table.
