Processing

Tantalum sheets are produced in accordance with GOST 492-73. Since the processability of titanium sheets depends on impurities, strict quality control standards have been developed. According to GOST 18 904.6-89 the share of such elements as aluminum, vanadium, iron, calcium, silicon, magnesium, manganese, copper, nickel, tin, titanium, chromium and others in pure tantalum shall not exceed a tenth of percent.

The peculiarities associated with cutting tantalum are due to the properties of the metal. The fact is that it has a tendency to stick to the cutting edge of the tool (we are talking about carbide cutters). That is why tantalum cutting on machines is carried out at low RPM with high-speed steel cutters. Additionally, emulsion lubrication is recommended.
