Mechanical processing

Machining niobium is difficult due to its lack of ductility. Forging or deep-drawing considerably increases the risk of tearing the workpiece. Heat treatment is carried out in a vacuum in order to eliminate the possibility of nitrogen or oxygen contamination of the metal.

Powder metallurgy

To make niobium strip, an ingot is used, which is produced by powder metallurgy. The powder metal is sintered into the shapes required for processing. The ingot is drawn into a strip by extrusion, i . e. by pressing the plastic mass through a flat slit, after which the strip is annealed in a vacuum-type furnace and cooled. The metal working temperature for making the strip is 1600 °C and the finished product is cooled down to 780-800 °C.

Cutting

Cutting niobium has a number of features. The success of the process and depends largely on both the temperature of the product and the purity of the material itself. When cutting, remember that the metallic dust of niobium is flammable and irritating to the skin and eyes. If ingested, it causes nerve damage and even paralysis.
