In the gas and water supply, steel pipe with an inch diameter designation is used. For example: 1″, 2″ or - half inch, three-quarter inch (½″, ¾″). If the pipe cross-section is 1″, that translates to 33.5 mm, which is different from the common 1″ (25.4 mm). There are no problems when assembling fittings, denoted only by inch dimensions. But when replacing steel "inch" pipes with other pipes, the inconsistency of the inch with the actual metric dimensions must be considered.
Inner Diameter
Since the inner lumen of the pipe is important for the flow of water, it is the inside diameter that is usually specified. But even here there is a generally accepted convention of designations - an inch ordinary pipe has an internal diameter of 27.1 mm, and the inch reinforced - 25.5 mm. The matter is that the most correct way is to designate pipes in units of nominal diameter DN (Dn) - which reflect the cross-section of the pipe and have no units of measurement. Du (Dn) is specified in whole numbers, and each step of conventional passage increases the capacity of the pipe by 40-60%. To determine metric dimensions, check with the table. When joining an inch pipe to another, metric, or, for example, to replace it, use transitional elements. This should take into account the actual metric size of the pipe outside and inside.
