The main problem of magnesium production is the multistage treatment of raw materials and subsequent extraction of high-purity metal. In 1829 French chemists obtained magnesium by reducing it with molten KCl. The next step to industrial production was made by Michael Faraday. In 1830 he obtained magnesium for the first time from molten MgCl2. The industrial method of obtaining this metal today is based on a method of magnesium extraction from molten chloride salts, which had been proposed by Michael Faraday.
Purification
The molten metal is systematically withdrawn from the electrolytic bath, and new portions of raw materials are added. Since the metal obtained by this method contains a relatively large (about 0.1%) of impurities, if necessary "raw" magnesium is subjected to further refinement. For this purpose, electrolytic refining or remelting in a vacuum with special fluxes are used. The material with high purification degree of 99.999% is obtained by electrolytic refining.
Technological properties
It is very light metal. Its plasticity largely depends on the content of additional impurities (nitrogen, oxygen). When in its pure form, it is well ductile and lends itself to various working methods such as stamping, pressing and rolling.
